I was wondering why some websites put a load on the CPU and make jaws quit talking? What does the website designer use to cause this and is there anything we can do about it?

Do you have a web address for an example?

One sight that can give you problems is the new york times at www.nytimes.com. It can bring jaws to its knees. The way to fix it is to set style sheet processing to "process top level style sheets only" or "1" in your default.jcf file. There is also a set style sheet processing to no style sheets (0), but I've never tried that. Freedom says that that's rarely used.

Is this what you were talking about Troy?

The message I posted earlier about style sheet processing may take a little more explanation, as freedom scientific advises against doing it. I've done it because I like to look at the new york times ocasionally, and I find that it helps with other web sites too.

Here's what freedom has to say.

Bulletin Type: TSN Number: 23638

Date Posted: 10/04/2005

Product Name: JAWS

Version: 6.0 plus

Category: Internet Explorer

Short Description:

Internet Explorer stops responding on the NYTimes.com Web site

Problem:

With JAWS 6.x, Internet Explorer may stop responding when navigating the NYTimes.com web site. This can occur when clicking a link, using ALT+LEFT ARROW,
pressing ALT+TAB, or when leaving the page.

Solution:

This is fixed in JAWS 7.0 released October 3, 2005.

If you are using JAWS 6.0, 6.1, or 6.2, you can make changes to your JAWS 6.x settings to resolve this problem.

WARNING: Making this change may result in side effects such as pages misreading. If JAWS reads pages in Internet Explorer differently after you make the
change, this could be the reason. If you do not have a problem with Internet Explorer failing to respond on the
www.NYTimes.com
site, it is recommend that you do not make the following adjustment unless directed by Freedom Scientific Technical Support.

1. Open the Start menu and choose Programs.
2. Open the JAWS program group, and then open the Explore JAWS submenu.
3. Choose Explore My Settings.
4. You are now in an Explorer window. Select the Default.jcf file.
NOTE: If you do not find the Default.jcf file, repeat steps 1-3, and then choose the Explore Shared Settings option at step 4.
5. Press the APPLICATIONS Key and choose the Open With option.
6 Select Notepad.
7. With the Default.jcf file now open in Notepad, press CTRL+F to bring up the Find dialog box.
8. Type "StyleSheetProcessing" and press ENTER.
9. Press ESC to close the Find dialog box.
10. You should now be on a line that looks like:

StyleSheetProcessing=2

11. Change the "2" to a "1" so the line looks like:

StyleSheetProcessing=1

12. Save the changes to the file.
13. Quit Notepad.
14. Quit and then restart JAWS.

Hope this helps.
